The Mahayana School of Thought

Buddhism was practiced originally in the Theravada form. It was strongly believed by the followers that they had to strictly in follow reclusive discipline, have scholarly attainment and strict observance of the scriptures. Among the followers, some saw this as being inflexible, stringent, limiting and quite challenging for anyone other than the monks and nuns to follow.

They wanted Buddhism to be embraced by the common people. This led to subdivision in Buddhism where a new unit that was more flexible and all inclusive of the common people. That was the Genesis of Mahayana Buddhism developed. This was around the first Century AD.

The new subdivision was formed with its main agenda as an attempt to restructure the teachings and accommodate more people. Given that it had more followers, it later came to be referred to as the Greater Vehicle or Mahayana. The Theravada Buddhism was then been referred to as the as Hinayana, or The Lesser Vehicle given that the followers were fewer due to its restrictions.

The Mahayana’s Buddha core focus was on the main concepts of enlightenment and getting to the Nirvana. Often it is has been said that he anticipated a time when his followers would be prepared for more than just basic teachings. The slow evolution of the Mahayana Buddhism revealed that thought over and above the initial teachings of Buddhism, the religion was able to offer great elasticity and openness . This made is easy to integrate it in the various cultures that it encountered in India, its country of origin, and as it spread to other countries.

A Bodhisattva, someone who dedicates his life to following the ways of Buddha to achieve a way if being that we can all aspire to be, was determined by the Mahayana as a mandate to assist all sentient beings from suffering as opposed to individual perfection. Mahayana Buddhists therefore had to take an oath never to enter Nirvana, despite the fact that they too strife to reach enlightenment, before helping others get there. They therefore vow be reincarnated, and assist the sentient beings in reaching Nirvana before they do.

The Mahayana Buddhists is therefore comes off as compassionate guardians and liberators who are selfless and aspire for equality in all human beings.
